Disability Awareness

Disability awareness is the understanding of disability as a diverse human experience shaped by health conditions, individual abilities, and social or environmental barriers. In medicine, it involves recognizing how physical, sensory, cognitive, and communication differences can affect healthcare access and outcomes, while using respectful language, accessible communication, and reasonable accommodations to support patient participation. Disability-aware practice helps clinicians identify barriers to diagnosis, treatment, and preventive care, strengthen informed consent, and provide more equitable, patient-centered services. It also supports research and medical education by promoting inclusion, reducing stigma, and improving the design of clinical environments, technologies, and public health programs.
