Vacuum-assisted Biopsy

Vacuum-assisted biopsy is a minimally invasive tissue-sampling technique that uses suction to obtain multiple specimens through a single image-guided probe, helping diagnose suspicious lesions while limiting surgical intervention. During the procedure, imaging directs the probe to the target, and a vacuum draws tissue into an aperture where a rotating cutter removes samples for pathological examination. Used widely for breast abnormalities detected by mammography, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging, the method can improve sampling of small or difficult-to-reach lesions and may remove some benign findings. Its precision, efficiency, and reduced scarring support accurate diagnosis and informed treatment planning.

Source: Schregel, K., et al. Optimized Management of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke using the stent retriever-assisted vacuum-locked extraction technique. A guiding sheath is introduced through the femoral artery to reach the clot. A catheter with a stent retriever secures and extracts the clot. Vascular imaging is done to confirm successful reperfusion.

Source: Robert M. Rioux, Ajay Sathe & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Vacuum is required for a number of laboratory procedures. This is most routinely achieved in the laboratory by the use of vacuum pumps. In addition to working at low pressures, vacuum pumps can also be used to enable rapid changing of the atmospheres in a reactor or flask by evacuation and backfilling.
