Nerve Cuff Electrodes

Nerve cuff electrodes are implantable neural interfaces that partially or completely surround a peripheral nerve to record its electrical activity or deliver targeted stimulation, making them important tools in neuroscience and neurotechnology. Conductive contacts positioned within an insulating cuff detect compound action potentials or inject current across the nerve, while electrode geometry, stimulation amplitude, and pulse timing influence which nerve fibers are activated. These devices support studies of peripheral nerve signaling and have applications in sensory feedback, motor control, functional electrical stimulation, and neuromodulation. By providing stable access to nerve activity without penetrating individual axons, nerve cuff electrodes can help connect biological nerves with prosthetic, diagnostic, and therapeutic systems.

2025

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.

2017

Among abdominal solid organ transplantation, pancreatic grafts are prone to develop severe ischemia reperfusion injury-associated graft damage, leading eventually to early graft loss. This protocol describes a model of murine pancreas transplantation using a non-suture cuff technique, ideally suited for analyzing these early, deleterious damages.
