Na podstawowym poziomie cała materia składa się z cząsteczek zbudowanych z różnych pierwiastków chemicznych.
Pierwiastki to czyste substancje, które stanowią tylko jeden rodzaj atomu.
Układ okresowy pierwiastków jest standardowym odniesieniem w chemii, w którym pierwiastki są ułożone zgodnie z ich rosnącą liczbą atomową.
Konkretnym symbolem używanym dla elementu jest często pierwsza lub dwie litery jego nazwy. Symbole mogą również pochodzić od łacińskiej lub niemieckiej nazwy elementu. Na przykład sód jest skracany jako Na dla Natrium, a żelazo jest skracane jako Fe dla żelaza.
96% materii biologicznej składa się głównie z czterech pierwiastków: tlenu, węgla, wodoru i azotu.
Pozostałe 4% składa się z wapnia, fosforu, potasu, siarki i żelaza.
U zwierząt, podczas gdy wapń jest niezbędny do zdrowego wzrostu zębów i kości, żelazo w hemoglobinie przenosi cząsteczki tlenu z płuc do innych komórek ciała.
Ponadto jony metali, takie jak magnez, mangan, miedź,, molibden i potas, wspomagają enzymy w katalizowaniu różnych reakcji metabolicznych.

Pierwiastki to najmniejsze jednostki materii, których nie można dalej rozłożyć w procesach chemicznych. Znanych jest 118 pierwiastków, ale nie wszystkie występują naturalnie i tylko kilka z nich jest niezbędnych do życia. Materia żywa składa się głównie z węgla, azotu, wodoru i tlenu, z mniejszymi ilościami innych pierwiastków, takich jak wapń, fosfor, potas i siarka. Inne pierwiastki też są niezbędne do życia, ale tylko w śladowych ilościach. 

 Układ okresowy dostarcza informacji o właściwościach fizycznych i chemicznych pierwiastków 

 Układ okresowy organizuje pierwiastki na podstawie ich właściwości fizycznych i chemicznych. Każdy kwadrat w układzie okresowym zawiera pełną nazwę, symbol chemiczny, liczbę atomową i masę atomową pierwiastka. Liczba atomowa pierwiastka odpowiada liczbie protonów znajdujących się w jego jądrze i dostarcza informacji o wielkości pierwiastka. Pierwiastki są zorganizowane w układzie okresowym w kolumny (grupy) i wiersze (okresy), głównie w oparciu o ich liczbę atomową. Są one również pogrupowane według innych właściwości fizycznych i chemicznych, takich jak reaktywność, lokalizacja ich najbardziej zewnętrznych elektronów i zdolność do tworzenia określonych typów wiązań. Pierwiastki w tej samej grupie (tj. kolumnie) różnią się wielkością, ale mają ze sobą wiele wspólnych właściwości chemicznych. Natomiast pierwiastki w tym samym okresie (tj. rzędzie) są bardziej podobne pod względem wielkości i mają elektrony umieszczone w podobnym miejscu, ale znacznie różnią się właściwościami chemicznymi. 

 Pierwiastki główne i pierwiastki śladowe tworzą ludzkie ciało 
 
 Całe życie na Ziemi zawiera pierwiastki: tlen, węgiel, wodór i azot. Dokładniej, 96% ludzkiego ciała składa się z tych czterech pierwiastki. Pozostałe 4% składa się głównie z wapnia, fosforu, potasu, siarki, sodu, chloru i magnezu, według względnej obfitości. Co więcej, niektóre pierwiastki są niezbędne dla człowieka, ale stanowią mniej niż 0,01% ciała; nazywane są one pierwiastkami śladowymi. Chociaż pierwiastki śladowe są obecne w niewielkich ilościach, nadal mają kluczowe znaczenie dla zdrowia. Na przykład żelazo odgrywa zasadniczą rolę w czerwonych krwinkach, pomagając wiązać tlen, dzięki czemu może być transportowany w całym układzie krążenia. Zbyt mało żelaza może powodować niedokrwistość z niedoboru żelaza, powodując zmęczenie, duszność, osłabienie i nieregularny rytm serca.

 Niektóre pierwiastki są szkodliwe dla organizmów żywych 

 Niektóre pierwiastki już w małych dawkach mają szkodliwy wpływ na zdrowie. Na przykład rtęć jest jednym z kilku metali ciężkich, który w małych dawkach może powodować szereg objawów – w zależności od dotkniętej tkanki – a w większych dawkach powoduje śmierć. Z biegiem czasu może gromadzić się w tkankach organizmów wielokomórkowych, dlatego wielokrotne narażenie stanowi problem. Zanieczyszczenia metalami ciężkimi często przedostają się do sieci troficznej na poziomie głównych producentów, tj. roślin, zanim wpłyną na organizmy na wyższych poziomach troficznych, takie jak ludzie.
