Scaled-down System Analysis

Scaled-down system analysis is the study of reduced-size representations of engineering systems to understand, evaluate, or predict the behavior of their full-scale counterparts. It works by selecting relevant physical relationships, preserving key scaling laws and similarity conditions, and comparing how variables such as geometry, forces, flow, energy, or response change with size. Engineers use this approach to test designs, identify failure modes, assess performance, and refine prototypes before committing to full-scale construction or operation. By reducing material use, cost, and testing risk, scaled-down analysis supports efficient development of complex systems across structural, mechanical, fluid, and thermal engineering.

Hydronium and hydroxide ions are present both in pure water and in all aqueous solutions, and their concentrations are inversely proportional as determined by the ion product of water (Kw). The concentrations of these ions in a solution are often critical determinants of the solution’s properties and the chemical behaviors of its other solutes. Two different solutions can differ in their hydronium or hydroxide ion concentrations by a million, billion, or even trillion times. A common means of...

We have developed a computer program to analyze neuronal morphology. In combination with two existing open source analysis tools, our program performs Sholl analysis and determines the number of neurites, branch points, and neurite tips. The analyses are performed so that local changes in neurite morphology can be observed.

Ribosomes play a central role in protein synthesis. Polyribosome (polysome) fractionation by sucrose density gradient centrifugation allows direct determination of translation efficiencies of individual mRNAs on a genome-wide scale. In addition, this method can be used for biochemical analysis of ribosome- and polysome-associated factors such as chaperones and signaling molecules.
