Pecam-1 Localization

PECAM-1 localization is the mapping of platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1, also called CD31, within cells, tissues, or vascular structures to understand its biological role. Researchers typically use antibody-based immunofluorescence or immunohistochemistry followed by microscopy to detect PECAM-1, which commonly concentrates at endothelial cell junctions and on selected leukocyte surfaces. In immunology and infection research, these patterns help assess endothelial integrity, leukocyte adhesion and transmigration, vascular inflammation, and tissue responses to pathogens. Comparing PECAM-1 distribution across healthy and infected samples can reveal changes in barrier function and immune-cell trafficking, supporting studies of inflammatory disease and host-pathogen interactions.

In this two-part study, a biological actuator was developed using highly flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) cantilevers and living muscle cells (cardiomyocytes), and characterized. The biological actuator was incorporated with a base made of modified PDMS materials to build a self-stabilizing, swimming biorobot.
