Force Transduction

Force transduction is the conversion of mechanical forces, such as pressure, stretch, or vibration, into biochemical or electrical signals that cells can detect and process. In neuroscience, mechanical deformation of sensory neurons or their surrounding tissues can alter membrane tension and open mechanically gated ion channels, allowing ion flux that changes the cell’s membrane potential and generates neural signals. This process supports touch, hearing, balance, proprioception, and the detection of pain or tissue strain. Understanding force transduction helps explain how the nervous system encodes physical stimuli and informs research on sensory disorders, neural interfaces, and mechanosensitive therapies.

Transduction

Among the three main modes of HGT—transformation, conjugation, and transduction—transduction is unique in that it is mediated by bacteriophages, or bacterial viruses.Transduction occurs in two ways. Generalized transduction occurs during the lytic cycle of a bacteriophage infection. In this process, bacteriophages infect bacterial cells, replicate within them, and ultimately cause cell lysis, releasing newly assembled virions. Occasionally, random fragments of the bacterial genome are...

Source: Lutz, D., et al. Assessment of Ultrastructural Neuroplasticity Parameters After In Utero Transduction of the Developing Mouse Brain and Spinal Cord. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates viral transduction via in-utero injection in mouse embryos. A pregnant mouse is prepared for the surgery, and a midline incision is made to expose the uterine horns. A mixture of a virus containing the desired gene and a tracking dye is injected into the embryos within the uterine sacs at the...

2026

Three-dimensional spheroid culture systems improve upon conventional 2D models for AAV gene therapy development. This methodology enables sensitive detection of AAV transduction at low doses, enhanced physiological relevance, and robust long-term monitoring. The platform supports potency assessment, high-throughput screening, and vector optimization across diverse cell lines and AAV serotypes.

In this video protocol we give a step by step explanation of lentiviral transduction in organoids of primary intestinal epithelium and of processing and downstream analysis of these cultures by quantitative RT-PCR, RNA-microarray and immunohistochemistry.

Intermolecular Forces

Atoms and molecules interact through bonds (or forces): intramolecular and intermolecular. The forces are electrostatic as they arise from interactions (attractive or repulsive) between charged species (permanent, partial, or temporary charges) and exist with varying strengths between ions, polar, nonpolar, and neutral molecules. The different types of intermolecular forces are ion–dipole, dipole–dipole, hydrogen bonds, and dispersion; among these, dipole–dipole, hydrogen bonds, and dispersion...
