Newborn Rodent Preparation

Newborn rodent preparation is the standardized handling and preparation of neonatal mice or rats for laboratory studies, particularly investigations of early nervous-system development. The process maintains the animal or collected neural tissue under carefully controlled conditions while researchers perform procedures such as anesthesia, tissue dissection, or preparation for electrophysiology, imaging, or molecular analysis. In neuroscience, careful preparation helps preserve developing brain structure and physiological function, improving the reliability and reproducibility of measurements. These methods support research on neural circuit formation, sensory development, neurodevelopmental disorders, and the effects of genetic or environmental factors during critical early-life stages.

Electrophysiological Recordings of Brainstem-Spinal Cord Preparations from a Newborn Rodent

2025

This video demonstrates electrophysiological recordings of isolated brainstem-spinal cord preparations from newborn rodents. The preparation is placed in a recording chamber, and the inspiratory bursts from the brainstem are recorded under oxygenated and oxygen-deprived conditions using the fourth ventral nerve root in the spinal cord.

Electrophysiology on Isolated Brainstem-spinal Cord Preparations from Newborn Rodents Allows Neural Respiratory Network Output Recording

The central respiratory drive is located in the brainstem. Spontaneous respiratory motor output from an isolated brainstem-spinal cord is recorded by placing an electrode on the fourth ventral root. This experimental approach is valuable for pharmacological investigations or the assessment of respiratory challenges and genetic manipulations on rhythmic motor behavior.
