What is Matter?

Matéria é qualquer coisa que tenha massa e ocupe espaço.
Toda a matéria é feita de substâncias fundamentais chamadas elementos. Cada elemento é composto de átomos únicos que retêm todas as propriedades desse elemento.
A matéria pode existir como sólida, como ossos e dentes; líquida, como sangue e urina; ou gasosa, como oxigênio e dióxido de carbono.
A matéria exibe propriedades físicas e químicas. As propriedades físicas da matéria são as características que podem ser observadas e medidas sem alterar sua identidade e composição, como massa, cor, volume, densidade, sabor ou aparência.
Algumas propriedades físicas, como ponto de fusão e ponto de congelamento, podem ser medidas quando a matéria muda de um estado físico para outro.
As propriedades químicas, como inflamabilidade, acidez ou toxicidade, são medidas apenas quando há uma mudança na composição química de uma substância.

o que é matéria?

A substância que compõem o universo - de um grão de areia a uma estrela - é chamada de matéria. Os cientistas definem matéria como qualquer coisa que ocupa espaço e tem massa. A massa de um objeto e seu peso são conceitos relacionados, mas não exatamente iguais. A massa de um objeto é a quantidade de matéria contida nele, e é a mesma tanto se o objeto estiver na Terra ou no ambiente de gravidade zero do espaço sideral. O peso de um objeto, por outro lado, é sua massa sendo afetada pela força da gravidade. Nos lugares onde a gravidade puxa fortemente a massa de um objeto, seu peso é maior do que em comparação ao seu peso onde a gravidade é mais fraca. Um objeto com uma certa massa pesa menos na lua, por exemplo, do que na Terra, porque a gravidade da lua é menor do que a da Terra. Em outras palavras, o peso é variável e é influenciado pela gravidade. Um pedaço de queijo que pesa um quilo na Terra pesa apenas cerca de duzentas gramas na lua.

Toda matéria no mundo natural é composta de uma ou mais das 92 substâncias fundamentais, chamadas de elementos. Um elemento é uma substância pura que se distingue de outros tipos de matéria porque não pode ser criada ou decomposta através de meios químicos comuns. Os principais elementos que compõem o corpo humano são: oxigênio (O), carbono (C), hidrogênio (H) e nitrogênio (N). Todos os elementos em nosso corpo são derivados dos alimentos que comemos e do ar que respiramos. Um átomo é a menor quantidade de um elemento que mantém as propriedades únicas desse elemento.

A maior parte da matéria existe na natureza, seja na forma de substâncias puras ou como misturas. As substâncias puras têm uma composição constante. Todas as amostras de uma substância pura têm a mesma composição e propriedades. As substâncias puras podem ser divididas em duas categorias: elementos e compostos. Os elementos são substâncias fundamentais, que não podem ser decompostas em substâncias mais simples. Na natureza, os elementos raramente existem isoladamente. Em vez disso, eles se combinam para formar compostos. Um composto é feito de dois ou mais elementos unidos por ligações químicas.

Uma mistura é composta por dois ou mais tipos de matéria que podem estar presentes em quantidades variáveis, e que podem ser separados por mudanças físicas, como evaporação. Uma mistura homogênea, também chamada de solução, apresenta uma composição uniforme e parece visualmente a mesma em todo o seu volume. Matter is the substance that makes up the universe, from a grain of sand to a star. Scientists define matter as anything that occupies space and has mass. Mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight depends on gravity.

Mass stays the same whether an object is on Earth or in the zero-gravity environment of outer space. Weight changes when gravity changes. An object weighs more where gravity is stronger and less where gravity is weaker. A piece of cheese that weighs a pound on Earth weighs only a few ounces on the moon.

All matter in the natural world is made of one or more of the 92 basic substances called elements. An element is a pure substance that cannot be created or broken down by ordinary chemical means. The main elements in the human body are oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen. We get these elements from the foods we eat and the air we breathe.

An atom is the smallest amount of an element that still keeps that element’s unique properties. Most matter in nature is found as either pure substances or mixtures. Pure substances have a constant composition, so every sample has the same makeup and properties.

Pure substances fall into two groups: elements and compounds. Elements are the basic substances that cannot be broken into simpler substances. In nature, elements rarely occur alone. They often combine to form compounds, which are made of two or more elements joined by chemical bonds.

A mixture contains two or more kinds of matter in varying amounts, and it can be separated by physical changes such as evaporation. A homogeneous mixture, also called a solution, has a uniform composition and looks the same throughout. Air is an example because it contains nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other gases.

A heterogeneous mixture has a composition that changes from place to place. Sand in water is one example. These classifications help explain how matter is organized in the natural world.
