Os elementos são substâncias puras que constituem apenas um tipo de átomo.
A tabela periódica é uma referência padrão em química em que os elementos são organizados de acordo com seu número atômico crescente.
O símbolo específico usado para um elemento geralmente é a primeira ou duas letras de seu nome. Os símbolos também podem vir do nome latino ou alemão de um elemento. Por exemplo, o sódio é abreviado como Na para Natrium, e o ferro é abreviado como Fe para Ferrum.
96% da matéria biológica é predominantemente composta por quatro elementos: oxigênio, carbono, hidrogênio e nitrogênio.
Os 4% restantes são compostos de cálcio, fósforo, potássio, enxofre e ferro.
Nos animais, enquanto o cálcio é essencial para o crescimento saudável dos dentes e ossos, o ferro na hemoglobina transporta as moléculas de oxigênio dos pulmões para as outras células do corpo.

Outros elementos também são necessários à vida, mas apenas em pequenas quantidades. A tabela periódica fornece informações sobre as propriedades físicas e químicas dos elementos A tabela periódica organiza os elementos com base em suas propriedades físicas e químicas. Cada quadrado da tabela periódica exibe o nome completo, símbolo químico, número atômico e peso atômico de um elemento.
