Os íons são átomos eletricamente carregados que ganharam ou perderam elétrons. Um átomo que perde elétrons e se torna carregado positivamente é um cátion, enquanto um átomo que ganha elétrons e se torna carregado negativamente é um ânion.
Os íons são vitais para muitos processos fisiológicos, como a transmissão de impulsos nervosos e a contração muscular.
Moléculas são combinações de dois ou mais átomos que compartilham elétrons. Eles podem consistir em átomos de um elemento, como uma molécula de oxigênio, ou átomos de diferentes elementos, como uma molécula de água.
Um composto é uma combinação de átomos de diferentes elementos quimicamente ligados em uma proporção fixa, independentemente de os elétrons serem transferidos ou compartilhados.
Os compostos iônicos são formados pela interação eletrostática entre íons metálicos e não metálicos, como no sal de mesa comum, com um cátion de sódio e um ânion cloreto ligados por meio de interações eletrostáticas.
Os compostos moleculares são formados quando átomos não metálicos são ligados por meio de ligações covalentes. Por exemplo, o metano é um composto molecular em que quatro átomos de hidrogênio compartilham elétrons com um átomo de carbono em uma proporção específica.

Íons, moléculas e compostos

Íons - Quando um átomo participa de uma reação química que resulta na doação ou aceitação de um ou mais elétrons, o átomo se torna carregado positiva ou negativamente. Isso costuma acontecer com a maioria dos átomos, para que eles tenham uma camada de valência completa. Isso pode acontecer tanto ganhando elétrons para preencher uma camada que está mais de metade completa, quanto doando elétrons para esvaziar uma camada que está menos da metade completa, deixando a próxima camada mais interna de elétrons como a nova camada de valência completa. Um átomo com carga elétrica - positiva ou negativa - é um íon.

O Potássio (K), por exemplo, é um elemento importante em todas as células do corpo. Seu número atômico é 19. Ele tem apenas um elétron em sua camada de valência. Essa característica faz com que o potássio seja altamente propenso a participar de reações químicas em que doa um elétron. Essa perda faz com que a carga positiva dos prótons do potássio seja mais influente do que a carga negativa de seus elétrons. Em outras palavras, o íon de potássio resultante será ligeiramente positivo. Um íon com carga positiva é conhecido como um cátion.

Outro elemento, o flúor (F), que é um componente dos ossos e dentes, tem um número atômico de nove. Ele tem sete elétrons em sua camada de valência. O flúor é muito propenso a se ligar a outros átomos para receber um elétron. Quando isso acontece, seus elétrons serão mais numerosos do que seus prótons, havendo um elétron a mais, e ele terá uma carga geral negativa. Um íon com carga negativa é conhecido como um ânion.

Os íons são fundamentais para o funcionamento regular do corpo, então seus desequilíbrios podem levar a problemas de saúde. Por exemplo, um desequilíbrio de íons de sódio pode causar doenças cardiovasculares. Níveis baixos de cálcio no sangue podem causar tetania - contrações musculares involuntárias incontroláveis.

Moléculas - Moléculas são simplesmente dois ou mais átomos quimicamente ligados. As moléculas podem consistir de átomos do mesmo elemento, como uma molécula de gás oxigênio, formada pela ligação entre dois átomos de oxigênio, respectivamente, ou podem ser formadas pela ligação entre átomos de elementos diferentes, como uma molécula de gás dióxido de carbono, formada pela ligação de átomos de oxigênio e carbono.

Compostos - Um composto é uma substância pura formada pela ligação de dois ou mais átomos, em uma proporção fixa. Por exemplo, o composto glicose funciona como um importante combustível para o corpo. Atoms can gain or lose electrons during chemical reactions and become ions. An ion is an atom with an electrical charge. This charge is positive or negative, and it often helps the atom reach a full valence shell.

Some atoms are more likely to donate electrons, while others are more likely to accept them. Potassium is one example. It has atomic number 19 and one electron in its valence shell, so it is likely to donate that electron and become a slightly positive ion called a cation. Fluorine is another example. It has atomic number 9 and seven electrons in its valence shell, so it is likely to accept one electron and become a negatively charged ion called an anion.

Ions are important for normal body function, so an imbalance can cause health problems. A sodium ion imbalance can contribute to cardiovascular diseases. Low blood calcium levels can also cause tetany, which is marked by uncontrollable involuntary muscle contractions.

Molecules and compounds are related but not the same. A molecule is two or more atoms chemically bonded together. The atoms may be the same element, as in oxygen gas, or different elements, as in carbon dioxide gas. A compound is a pure substance made when two or more atoms bond in a fixed proportion.

Glucose is a useful example of a compound. It is an important body fuel and always contains the same elements in the same relative amounts: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. In glucose, there are always six carbon units and six oxygen units for every twelve hydrogen units.
