Introduction to Chemical Reactions

Uma reação química é um processo em que átomos em uma ou mais substâncias, conhecidas como reagentes, mudam seu arranjo quebrando suas ligações químicas e formando novas ligações para criar os produtos.
As reações que resultam em uma liberação líquida de energia são exergônicas, enquanto as reações endergônicas são absorvedoras líquidas de energia.
As reações bioquímicas que ocorrem no corpo humano são categorizadas como síntese ou anabólicas, como síntese de proteínas, decomposição ou catabólicas, como a quebra de polissacarídeos em açúcares simples, ou reações de troca, como a transferência de fosfato de ATP para glicose para formar glicose-fosfato.
Muitas reações bioquímicas usam enzimas como catalisadores para acelerar a reação.

Reações químicas requerem energia suficiente para fazer com que a matéria se choque com precisão e força suficientes para quebrar ligações químicas existentes e formar novas ligações. Em geral, a energia cinética é a forma de energia que impulsiona qualquer tipo de matéria em movimento. A energia potencial é a energia da posição, ou a energia que a matéria possui devido à disposição ou estrutura de seus componentes. Todos os átomos possuem energia cinética, pois estão sempre em movimento. A energia necessária para quebrar as ligações químicas dos reagentes e iniciar uma reação é chamada de energia de ativação. A concentração e temperatura dos reagentes podem influenciar a taxa (velocidade) de uma reação química.

A convenção para se escrever equações químicas envolve colocar as fórmulas dos reagentes no lado esquerdo de uma seta de reação e as fórmulas dos produtos no lado direito. Por essa convenção, e pelas definições de "reagente" e "produto", uma equação química representa uma reação ocorrendo da esquerda para a direita. Reações reversíveis, no entanto, podem ocorrer tanto para frente (da esquerda para a direita), quanto em reverso (da direita para a esquerda). Quando as taxas das reações direta e reversa são iguais, as concentrações das espécies de reagente e produto permanecem constantes ao longo do tempo, e o sistema está em equilíbrio. As concentrações relativas de reagentes e produtos em sistemas em equilíbrio variam muito; alguns sistemas contêm principalmente produtos em seu equilíbrio, alguns contêm principalmente reagentes, e alguns contêm quantidades apreciáveis de ambos.

Chemical reactions start with reactants and end with products. Reactants are the substances that enter a reaction, and products are the new substances that form. For example, sodium and chloride ions are the reactants in the formation of table salt.

Chemical reactions follow the law of conservation of mass. Matter is not created or destroyed during the reaction. That means the atoms and elements in the reactants are still present in the products, and nothing new appears in the products that was not already in the reactants.

Energy is needed to start many reactions. Collisions between particles must happen with enough force and precision to break old chemical bonds and form new ones. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, while potential energy is the energy that comes from position or structure. Atoms always have kinetic energy because they are always moving. The energy needed to break the bonds of the reactants and begin the reaction is called activation energy.

Reaction rate can change with concentration and temperature. Chemical equations show reactants on the left side of an arrow and products on the right side. This convention shows the reaction moving from left to right. Some reactions are reversible, so they can also move from right to left.

In a reversible reaction, equilibrium happens when the forward and reverse reaction rates are equal. At that point, the concentrations of reactants and products stay constant over time. Some equilibrium systems contain mostly products, some contain mostly reactants, and some contain significant amounts of both. In human blood, excess hydrogen ions bind to bicarbonate ions to form carbonic acid. If carbonic acid is added, some of it changes back into bicarbonate and hydrogen ions.

Biological reactions often do not reach equilibrium because the concentrations of reactants and products keep changing. In many cases, one reaction’s product becomes a reactant for another reaction. In the blood example, carbonic acid can also leave the body as carbon dioxide gas during exhalation instead of changing back. This pulls the reaction to the right by the law of mass action and helps maintain homeostasis in the blood.
