Acute Chronic

Acute and chronic describe the timing and course of biological conditions, responses, or diseases, helping distinguish rapid, short-term events from persistent or recurring states. Acute conditions typically develop quickly and trigger immediate physiological or immune responses, whereas chronic conditions continue over extended periods and may involve sustained inflammation, repeated tissue injury, or long-term adaptation. This distinction supports the study of infection, inflammation, injury, and disease progression in biology. Comparing acute and chronic processes helps researchers interpret symptoms, identify underlying mechanisms, evaluate treatment responses, and understand how temporary disturbances can develop into lasting biological changes.

We describe a non-invasive imaging method for distinguishing inflammatory stages. Systemic delivery of luminol reveals areas of acute inflammation dependent upon MPO activity in neutrophils. In contrast, injection of lucigenin allows for visualization of chronic inflammation dependent upon Phox activity in macrophages.

Acute and Chronic Tactile Sensory Testing after Spinal Cord Injury in Rats

We describe two tactile sensory testing methods for acute or chronic periods of spinal cord injury in rats. These validated procedures can detect the development and maintenance of allodynia-like sensations.

Acute and Chronic Models of Hyperglycemia in Zebrafish: A Method to Assess the Impact of Hyperglycemia on Neurogenesis and the Biodistribution of Radiolabeled Molecules

This work describes methods to establish acute and chronic hyperglycemia models in zebrafish. The aim is to investigate the impact of hyperglycemia on physiological processes, such as constitutive and injury-induced neurogenesis. The work also highlights the use of zebrafish to follow radiolabeled molecules (here, [18F]-FDG) using PET/CT.

Described here are three experimental approaches for studying the dynamics of HIV infection in humanized mice. The first permits the study of chronic infection events, whereas the two latter allows for the study of acute events after primary infection or viral reactivation.

Generating Acute and Chronic Experimental Models of Motor Tic Expression in Rats

We present protocols for generating acute and chronic experimental models of tic expression in freely behaving rats. The models are based on striatal cannula implantation and subsequent GABAA antagonist application. The acute model uses transient injections whereas the chronic model utilizes prolonged infusions via a subcutaneous implanted mini-osmotic pump.
