Pneumonia Ards

Pneumonia-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe complication in which lung infection triggers widespread inflammation and impaired oxygen exchange. Microbial invasion activates immune cells and inflammatory mediators, disrupting the alveolar-capillary barrier; protein-rich fluid then accumulates in the air spaces, reducing lung compliance and causing hypoxemia. In immunology and infection research, this condition illustrates how protective host defenses can produce tissue injury when inflammation becomes excessive. Understanding the interaction among pathogens, immune signaling, epithelial cells, and pulmonary endothelium supports earlier recognition, improved supportive care, and investigation of therapies that limit lung damage without compromising antimicrobial defense.

Repeated pulmonary lavages in anesthetized pigs induce lung injury resembling major aspects of human acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). For this purpose the lungs are repeatedly lavaged with 0.9% saline at 37 °C. The goal of the protocol is a reproducible mitigation of gas exchange and hemodynamics for research in ARDS.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment as a Useful Adjunctive Tool for Pneumonia

2014

Pneumonia is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. Osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT) may be utilized as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of pneumonia to enhance biomechanical and immune function; and ultimately, to reduce hospital stay, duration of antibiotics, incidence of respiratory failure, and mortality. In this video-article, we will review randomized controlled studies on the use of OMT in pneumonia patients, as well as demonstrate specific hands-on...
