Mathematical Learning Disabilities

Mathematical learning disabilities are persistent, unexpected difficulties with understanding and using numerical information, calculation, or mathematical reasoning despite appropriate learning opportunities, and they can affect academic and everyday functioning. They may involve impaired processing of numerical magnitude, quantity-symbol relationships, arithmetic facts, working memory, or the sequential procedures needed to solve problems; behavioral observation helps distinguish these patterns from limited instruction, attention differences, or anxiety. Assessment typically combines standardized tasks with analysis of error patterns, strategy use, and classroom behavior. Identifying the underlying profile supports targeted instruction, accommodations, and interventions while informing research on learning, cognition, and behavior.

Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning. Dyslexia Dyslexia is a...

Intellectual disability (ID) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in intellectual and adaptive functioning that manifest during the developmental period. This condition encompasses challenges in reasoning, memory, problem-solving, and learning, accompanied by impairments in everyday life skills, such as communication, self-care, and social interactions. Intellectual disability affects approximately 1% of the population in the United States, impacting an estimated 5...

Objective and easy measurement of sensory processing is extremely difficult in nonverbal or vulnerable pediatric patients. We developed a new methodology to quantitatively assess infants and children's cortical processing of light touch, speech sounds, and the multisensory processing of the 2 stimuli, without requiring active subject participation or causing discomfort in vulnerable patients.

Consider the market for compact cars as an example, where 'P' stands for the price of a compact car in thousands of dollars. We can model the quantity demanded (Qd) and quantity supplied (Qs) with the following linear equations: Quantity Demanded for Compact Cars: Qd = 60−3P Quantity Supplied for Compact Cars: Qs = 20+2P At market equilibrium, Qd = Qs. By setting these two equations equal to each other, we can solve for 'P', the equilibrium price: 60−3P = 20+2P Solving this equation gives us...
