Metacognition Assessment

Metacognition assessment is the systematic evaluation of how people monitor and regulate their own thinking, learning, and decision-making, making it important for understanding behavior. It typically compares subjective judgments, such as confidence or predicted performance, with observable outcomes while examining processes including planning, monitoring, error detection, and strategy adjustment. Researchers use questionnaires, verbal reports, behavioral tasks, and confidence ratings to measure metacognitive awareness and calibration, or the match between confidence and accuracy. These assessments help explain differences in learning, problem-solving, self-regulation, and decision-making, while informing educational interventions and behavioral research on how people adapt their actions based on feedback.

Metacognition

2024

Metacognition is a conscious process where individuals are aware of their cognitive and executive processes, such as planning before solving a problem or self-monitoring during reading. For instance, a writer may need help with composing a piece. The situation involves a writer who is working on a piece of writing, but while doing so, they realize that something is missing. They notice that their characters lack depth or details. This realization occurs because the writer is reflecting on their...

Metacognitive Development: How Children Estimate Their Memory

2023

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Human memory is fallible, and people often cannot accurately recall what they have seen or heard. Adults are aware of their limited memory capacity, so they use strategies, such as rehearsal and mnemonic devices, to improve their recall of important information. Because adults understand the limits of memory, they know it makes more sense to write down the items on their shopping list rather than to try to...

Testing for Metacognitive Responding Using an Odor-based Delayed Match-to-Sample Test in Rats

2018

This protocol describes a method for investigating the possibility of metamemory, or memory awareness, in rodents. The odor-based delayed-matching-to-sample paradigm is a novel, ecologically-relevant behavioral test useful for determining the extent to which rodents can adaptively respond based on cognitively monitoring the strength of their memory states.
