Composite Tissue Bioengineering

Composite Tissue Bioengineering is the design and fabrication of living constructs that combine multiple tissue types, cell populations, or biomaterial components to recreate the structure and function of complex biological systems. It works by organizing cells within engineered scaffolds or matrices that provide spatial support, biochemical cues, and mechanical properties, enabling cell adhesion, differentiation, extracellular matrix production, and communication across tissue interfaces. In bioengineering, this approach supports the development of skin, bone-cartilage, muscle-tendon, and other integrated grafts for regenerative medicine. It also provides model systems for studying tissue interactions, evaluating therapies, and improving the functional integration of engineered implants.

A protocol to expose bare fibers on the composite surface by eliminating resin rich area is presented. The fibers are exposed during fabrication of the composites, not by the post surface treatment. The exposed carbon composites exhibit high electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction and high mechanical property.

This protocol aims to fabricate 3D cardiac spheroids (CSs) by co-culturing cells in hanging drops. Collagen-embedded CSs are treated with doxorubicin (DOX, a cardiotoxic agent) at physiological concentrations to model heart failure. In vitro testing using DOX-treated CSs may be used to identify novel therapies for heart failure patients.

The Use of Gas Chromatography to Analyze Compositional Changes of Fatty Acids in Rat Liver Tissue during Pregnancy
