Gene Expression Control

Gene expression control is the regulation of when, where, and how much RNA or protein a gene produces, allowing cells with the same genome to develop distinct structures and functions. It operates through coordinated mechanisms such as transcription factor binding, chromatin remodeling, epigenetic modification, RNA processing and degradation, and control of translation. In biology, these regulatory layers guide development, maintain cellular identity, and help cells respond to environmental signals. Understanding gene expression control is essential for studying disease mechanisms, interpreting genetic variation, and developing applications in biotechnology, including engineered cells and targeted therapies.

Optogenetic Control of Gene Expression in Corynebacterium glutamicum

2025

Take a culture of Corynebacterium glutamicum, transformed with a plasmid carrying a fluorescent reporter gene downstream of the ribonucleic acid anti-terminator or RAT sequence, in a multi-well plate.During transcription, the RAT-RNA forms a stem-loop structure that blocks RNA polymerase, halting reporter gene expression. The plasmid also constitutively expresses LicV, a fusion protein comprising the RAT-RNA-binding protein, LicT, and the blue-light-sensitive VVD domain. In darkness, LicV remains...

What is Gene Expression?

2019

Overview Gene expression is the process in which DNA directs the synthesis of functional products, that is, proteins. Cells can regulate gene expression at various stages. It allows organisms to generate different cell types and enables cells to adapt to internal and external factors. Genetic Information Flows from DNA to RNA to Protein A gene is a stretch of DNA that serves as the blueprint for functional RNAs and proteins. Since DNA is made up of nucleotides and proteins consist of amino...

Combinatorial Gene Control

2020

Combinatorial gene control is the synergistic action of several transcriptional factors to regulate the expression of a single gene. The absence of one or more of these factors may lead to a significant difference in the level of gene expression or repression. The expression of more than 30,000 genes is controlled by approximately 2000-3000 transcription factors. This is possible because a single transcription factor can recognize more than one regulatory sequence. The specificity in gene...
