Lsr Two Flow Cytometer

The LSR II flow cytometer is a laboratory instrument that rapidly measures physical and fluorescent characteristics of individual cells, supporting quantitative analysis in biology. It uses hydrodynamic focusing to align cells in a fluid stream, where laser light illuminates each cell; detectors then capture scattered light and fluorescence from labeled molecules, converting these signals into multiparameter data. Researchers use the instrument to identify cell populations, assess protein expression, characterize immune responses, and evaluate cellular states such as viability or activation. Its ability to analyze thousands of cells individually helps reveal biological heterogeneity and supports applications in immunology, cell biology, disease research, and experimental medicine.

An efficient method to obtain highly purified viable meiotic fractions from mouse testis is described, which combines a refined cell dissociation protocol with fluorescent activated cell sorting (FACS). This method takes advantage of differences in the DNA content and nuclear density of discrete meiotic fractions.
