Navigation Strategies

Navigation strategies are the sensory and behavioral processes organisms use to determine their position, choose directions, and reach important locations. In biology, navigation can combine external cues, such as light, odors, landmarks, and magnetic fields, with internal information about movement, orientation, and spatial memory. Animals may adjust their paths through taxis, landmark recognition, route learning, or path integration, depending on their environment and sensory abilities. Studying these strategies helps explain migration, foraging, homing, and habitat selection, while revealing how nervous systems convert environmental information into coordinated movement and adaptive behavior.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.

The dry-land Barnes maze is widely used to measure spatial navigation ability in response to mildly aversive stimuli. Over consecutive days, performance (e.g. latency to locate escape cage) of control subjects improves, indicative of normal learning and memory. Differences between rats and mice necessitate apparatus and methodology changes that are detailed here.

Dynamic navigation systems (DNS) provide real-time visualization and guidance to the operator during endodontic access cavities preparation. The planning of the procedure requires three-dimensional imaging utilizing cone beam computed tomography and surface scans. After the export of the planning data to the DNS, access cavities can be prepared with minimal invasion.
