Network Model Evaluation

Network model evaluation is the process of assessing whether a mathematical network model accurately represents relationships or interactions observed in a biological system. It examines how well model assumptions, parameters, and predicted links reproduce measured network structure and behavior, often by comparing predictions with independent data, null models, or cross-validation and calculating metrics such as precision, recall, and goodness-of-fit. In biology, these evaluations help test models of gene regulation, protein interactions, metabolic pathways, and ecological communities, revealing robust patterns, model limitations, and promising hypotheses for experiments and systems-level understanding.

A custom protocol is described to differentiate mouse ES cells into defined populations of highly pure neurons exhibiting functioning synapses and emergent network behavior. Electrophysiological analysis demonstrates the loss of synaptic transmission following exposure to botulinum neurotoxin serotypes /A-/G and tetanus neurotoxin.

Protein Networks

An organism can have thousands of different proteins, and these proteins must cooperate to ensure the health of an organism. Proteins bind to other proteins and form complexes to carry out their functions. Many proteins interact with multiple other proteins creating a complex network of protein interactions. These interactions can be represented through maps depicting protein-protein interaction networks, represented as nodes and edges. Nodes are circles that are representative of a protein,...

Piping Networks and Pressure Losses

Source: Alexander S Rattner, Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA This experiment introduces the measurement and modeling of pressure losses in piping networks and internal flow systems. In such systems, frictional flow resistance from channel walls, fittings, and obstructions causes mechanical energy in the form of fluid pressure to be converted to heat. Engineering analyses are needed to size flow hardware to ensure...
