P4-atpase Family

The P4-ATPase family comprises ATP-driven lipid flippases that maintain the asymmetric distribution of phospholipids across cellular membranes, a property essential for membrane identity and function. These P-type ATPases use energy from ATP hydrolysis to undergo conformational changes that selectively transport phospholipids from the exoplasmic or luminal leaflet to the cytosolic leaflet, often working with CDC50 beta subunits. P4-ATPases support membrane trafficking, organelle organization, cell signaling, and overall membrane homeostasis. Their study helps explain how cells regulate lipid composition and provides insight into membrane-related disorders and potential therapeutic targets.

Protein Families

Protein families are groups of homologous proteins; that is, they have similarities in amino acid sequences and three-dimensional structures. Protein families usually occur because of gene duplication, where an additional copy of a gene is inserted into the genome of an organism. Mutations that change the amino acids but still allow the protein to be properly synthesized, will lead to new protein family members. If these new proteins contain similar amino acids in key locations, protein...

We describe a basic protocol for quantitating in vitro ATPase activity. This protocol can be optimized based on the level of activity and requirements for a given purified ATPase.

Gene Families

2020

Gene families consist of groups of genes proposed to have originated from a common ancestor. Typically these arise through events in which a gene or genes are mistakenly duplicated during cell division. Unlike their parent genes (which are subject to selection pressure to maintain function), these gene copies do not need to preserve their sequences and may evolve at a relatively faster rate. Occasionally these regions can be adapted to take on new roles within the organism, becoming novel genes...

Family therapy conceptualizes psychological challenges as arising from dysfunctional interactions within the family unit, rather than as isolated issues within individuals. This approach seeks to address and transform the patterns of communication, roles, and relationships within families to promote healthier dynamics and emotional well-being for all members. Strategic Family Therapy Strategic family therapy emphasizes resolving communication barriers and improving problem-solving abilities...
