Temporal Expression Dynamics

Temporal Expression Dynamics describes how the level and timing of gene expression change over time, revealing when biological programs begin, peak, persist, or decline. These dynamics arise through coordinated regulation of transcription, RNA processing, translation, and degradation, which together shape the amplitude, duration, and frequency of molecular signals. In biology, measuring expression across developmental stages, cell cycles, environmental responses, or disease progression helps distinguish transient responses from stable state changes. Time-resolved approaches, including sequential sampling and live-cell reporters, therefore clarify regulatory mechanisms and support models of cellular decision-making, tissue development, and disease-associated dysregulation.

Temporal Ordering of Dynamic Expression Data from Detailed Spatial Expression Maps

2017

The segmentation clock drives oscillatory gene expression across the pre-somitic mesoderm (PSM). Dynamic Notch activity is key to this process. We use imaging and computational analyses to extract temporal dynamics from spatial expression data to demonstrate that Delta ligand and Notch receptor expression oscillate in the vertebrate PSM.
