Tip Cell Gene Expression

Tip cell gene expression describes the set of genes selectively activated in endothelial cells at the forefront of new blood vessel sprouts, making it central to understanding angiogenesis. In response to local signals such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), these cells increase expression of guidance and motility programs, while Delta-like ligand 4 (DLL4) activates Notch signaling in neighboring endothelial cells and helps establish tip and stalk cell identities. Studying these expression patterns reveals how vessels sense tissue cues, extend toward targets, and coordinate sprout formation, with applications in developmental biology and research on tumor growth, ischemic repair, and vascular disease.

Cell Specific Gene Expression

2020

Multicellular organisms contain a variety of structurally and functionally distinct cell types, but the DNA in all the cells originated from the same parent cells. The differences in the cells can be attributed to the differential gene expression. Liver cells, whose functions include detoxification of blood, production of bile to metabolize fats, and synthesis of proteins essential for metabolism, must express a specific set of genes to perform their functions. Gene expression also varies with...

What is Gene Expression?

Overview Gene expression is the process in which DNA directs the synthesis of functional products, that is, proteins. Cells can regulate gene expression at various stages. It allows organisms to generate different cell types and enables cells to adapt to internal and external factors. Genetic Information Flows from DNA to RNA to Protein A gene is a stretch of DNA that serves as the blueprint for functional RNAs and proteins. Since DNA is made up of nucleotides and proteins consist of amino...

2023

Gene expression is the complex process where a cell uses its genetic information to make functional products. This process is regulated at multiple stages, and any misregulation could lead to diseases such as cancer. This video highlights important historical discoveries relating to gene expression, including the understanding of how distinct combinations of DNA bases encode the amino acids that make up proteins. Key questions in the field of gene expression research are explored, followed by a...
