Umbilical Region

The umbilical region is the central area of the anterior abdominal wall surrounding the navel, an important anatomical landmark used to describe abdominal structures and clinical findings. It contains the umbilicus, a scar formed after the umbilical cord is divided, and overlies portions of the small intestine and transverse colon; its position reflects the body’s midline organization and fetal connection to the placenta. In biology and medicine, the region helps researchers and clinicians map abdominal anatomy, assess pain, swelling, hernias, and other abnormalities, and understand how fetal circulation and postnatal tissue remodeling shape body structure.

The goal of this protocol is to isolate endothelial progenitor cells from umbilical cord blood. Some of the applications include using these cells as a biomarker for identifying patients with cardiovascular risk, treating ischemic diseases, and creating tissue-engineered vascular and heart valve constructs.
