Vero Cells

Vero cells are an immortalized mammalian cell line derived from the kidney tissue of African green monkeys and widely used as a laboratory model in biology. They grow as adherent cells under controlled culture conditions and support replication of many viruses because they cannot produce type I interferons, important proteins in antiviral defense, although they can respond to externally supplied interferon. Researchers use Vero cells to study viral infection, host-cell interactions, cytopathic effects, and antiviral responses, while biomanufacturing laboratories apply them to vaccine and virus-based product development. Their reproducible growth and permissiveness make them valuable for virology and infectious-disease research.

Rescue of recombinant arenaviruses from cloned cDNAs, an approach referred to as reverse genetics, allows researchers to investigate the role of specific viral gene products, as well as the contribution of their different specific domains and residues, to many different aspects of the biology of arenavirus. Likewise, reverse genetics techniques in FDA-approved cell lines (Vero) for vaccine development provides novel possibilities for the generation of effective and safe vaccines to combat human...

Zika Virus (ZIKV), an emerging pathogen, is linked to fetal developmental abnormalities and microcephaly. The establishment of an effective infectious cell culture system is crucial for studies of ZIKV replication as well as vaccine and drug development. In this study, various virological assays pertaining to ZIKV are illustrated and discussed.

An In Vitro Assay to Study Arenavirus Attachment to the Host Cell

Source: Klaus, J. P., et al Highly Sensitive Assay for Measurement of Arenavirus-cell Attachment. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates how to measure arenavirus attachment to monkey kidney cells. The assay uses low temperatures to block endocytosis and isolate the virus binding step. The approach enables precise quantification of surface-bound virus particles under conditions that restrict internalization.
