Mycobacterial Cell Wall

The mycobacterial cell wall is a specialized, lipid-rich envelope that surrounds Mycobacterium species and strongly influences their survival, staining properties, and interactions with host immunity. Beneath an outer layer containing long-chain mycolic acids, a covalently linked arabinogalactan and peptidoglycan framework provides structural support, while associated lipids regulate permeability and surface signaling. This unusually robust barrier limits the entry of many antibiotics and contributes to resistance against environmental stresses, helping pathogenic mycobacteria persist within hosts. Its architecture and biosynthetic pathways are therefore central to tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections, making cell-wall components important targets for antimicrobial development and immunological investigation.

A technique called Comprehensive Microarray Polymer Profiling (CoMPP) for the characterisation of plant cell wall glycans is described. This method combines the specificity of monoclonal antibodies directed to defined glycan-epitopes with a miniature microarray analytical platform allowing screening of glycan occurrence in a broad range of biological contexts.

The bacterial cell wall is an essential structural component that encases the plasma membrane, preserving cellular integrity, determining shape, and protecting against osmotic stress. This rigid yet flexible structure primarily comprises peptidoglycan, a polymer that forms a mesh-like matrix conferring mechanical strength and flexibility.Peptidoglycan Composition and StructurePeptidoglycan, the core of the bacterial cell wall, comprises alternating units of N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and...

Plant Cell Wall

The plant cell wall gives plant cells shape, support, and protection. As a cell matures, its cell wall specializes according to the cell type. For example, the parenchyma cells of leaves possess only a thin, primary cell wall.Collenchyma and sclerenchyma cells, on the other hand, mainly occur in the outer layers of a plant's stems and leaves. These cells provide the plant with strength and support by either partially thickening their primary cell wall (i.e., collenchyma), or depositing a...
