Serial Blood Sampling

Serial blood sampling is the planned collection of multiple blood specimens from the same subject at defined time points, allowing biological changes to be measured over time. In medicine and biomedical research, samples may be obtained through repeated venipuncture or an indwelling catheter, with timing, sample volume, processing, and storage standardized to preserve reliable data while limiting blood loss. This longitudinal approach supports pharmacokinetic studies, therapeutic drug monitoring, biomarker evaluation, and assessment of disease progression or treatment response. By linking blood measurements to interventions or clinical events, serial sampling helps characterize dynamic physiology and improves evidence for diagnosis, dosing, and patient care.

Detailed microsurgical techniques are demonstrated to establish a longer-term jugular vein cannulation rat model for sequential blood collection in the same animal. Physiological and hematological parameters have been monitored during the rat's recovery phase. This model has been applied to study pharmacokinetics of orally administered polyphenol without inducing animal stress.

Source: Jonathan F. Blaize1, Elizabeth Suter1, and Christopher P. Corbo1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Wagner College, 1 Campus Road, Staten Island NY, 10301 Quantitative assessment of prokaryotes can be onerous given their abundance, propensity for exponential proliferation, species diversity within a population, and specific physiological needs. Compounding this challenge, is the four-phase nature in which bacteria replicate (lag, log, stationary and death). The ability to accurately...

Serial Position Effect

2025

The serial position effect is a cognitive phenomenon where individuals are more likely to recall the first and last items in a list compared to those in the middle. This effect is divided into the primacy effect and the recency effect. The primacy effect is observed when the initial items in a list are remembered better. This occurs because these items are rehearsed more frequently or receive more elaborative processing, allowing them to be encoded into long-term memory more effectively. For...

This protocol outlines a routine method for using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy (SBF-SEM), a powerful 3D imaging technique. Successful application of SBF-SEM hinges on proper fixation and tissue staining techniques, as well as careful consideration of imaging settings. This protocol contains practical considerations for the entirety of this process.
