Strain Rate Measurement

Strain rate measurement quantifies how quickly a material or biological tissue deforms over time, providing a sensitive indicator of mechanical function. In medicine, it is commonly derived from the rate of change in strain, or from velocity differences across a tissue region, using techniques such as tissue Doppler imaging and speckle-tracking echocardiography; results are typically expressed in s⁻¹. Cardiac applications assess the timing and strength of myocardial contraction and relaxation, helping identify functional abnormalities that may precede visible changes in heart pumping. Strain rate analysis therefore supports earlier characterization of disease, treatment assessment, and quantitative cardiovascular research.

The steady state level of specific mRNAs is determined by the rate of synthesis and decay of the mRNA. Genome-wide mRNA degradation rates or the decay rates of specific mRNAs can be measured by determining mRNA half-lives. This protocol focuses on measurement of mRNA decay rates in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Measurements of Strain

Strain quantifies the deformation of a material under force, typically measured as normal strain, which represents the change in length when compared with the original length. Electrical strain gauges are used for enhanced accuracy. These devices consist of a conductive wire mounted on a paper backing that adheres to the material's surface. These gauges operate on the piezoresistive effect, where the wire's electrical resistance changes in response to mechanical deformation. The strain gauge...

Polarimetry finds application in chemical kinetics to measure the concentration and reaction kinetics of optically active substances during a chemical reaction. Optically active substances have the capability of rotating the plane of polarization of linearly polarized light passing through them—a feature called optical rotation. Optical activity is attributed to the molecular structure of substances. Normal monochromatic light is unpolarized and possesses oscillations of the electrical field in...
