Cervical Sympathetic Ganglion Block

Cervical Sympathetic Ganglion Block is a procedure that temporarily interrupts sympathetic nerve activity in the neck, providing a clinical and experimental tool for evaluating autonomic function and managing certain pain conditions. A clinician deposits local anesthetic near cervical sympathetic ganglia, such as the stellate ganglion, to prevent action-potential transmission through postganglionic sympathetic fibers and produce changes in regional blood flow, sweating, and pain signaling. In neuroscience, the block helps investigate interactions between the autonomic and sensory nervous systems and may support diagnosis or treatment of sympathetically maintained pain, complex regional pain syndrome, and selected head, neck, or upper-limb disorders.

Source: Shionoya, Y., et al. Ethanol-Induced Cervical Sympathetic Ganglion Block Applications for Promoting Canine Inferior Alveolar Nerve Regeneration Using an Artificial Nerve. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates a canine model for inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) regeneration using a biodegradable scaffold and ethanol-induced sympathetic blockade. The procedure involves surgically accessing the cervical sympathetic ganglion and injecting ethanol to induce vasodilation. The resulting...

We evaluated the effect of cervical sympathetic ganglion block on nerve repair using artificial nerve conduits. Male beagle dogs were each implanted with an artificial nerve across a 10-mm gap in the left inferior alveolar nerve; left cervical sympathetic ganglion was blocked by injecting 99.5% ethanol via lateral thoracotomy.

The Sympathetic Nervous System

Overview The sympathetic nervous system—one of the two major divisions of the autonomic nervous system—is activated in times of stress. It prepares the body to meet the challenges of a demanding circumstance while inhibiting essential body functions—such as digestion—that are a lower priority at the moment. The “Fight or Flight” System As a student, you may have had the experience of walking into class and finding a surprise exam that you were not expecting. In the moment of realization, you...
