Ayrıca reaktivite, en dıştaki elektronların konumu ve belirli türde bağ kurma yetenekleri gibi diğer fiziksel ve kimyasal özelliklerine göre de gruplandırılırlar. Aynı gruptaki (yani sütun) elementlerin boyutları farklılık gösterir ancak birbirleriyle birçok ortak kimyasal özelliğe sahiptirler. Buna karşılık, aynı dönemdeki (yani sıradaki) elementlerin boyutları daha benzerdir ve elektronları benzer bir yerde bulunur, ancak kimyasal özellikleri büyük ölçüde farklılık gösterir.
