Micro Ct Analysis

Micro-CT analysis is a non-destructive imaging technique that produces high-resolution, three-dimensional representations of internal structures, making it valuable for characterizing complex biological tissues and engineered materials. The method rotates a specimen through an X-ray beam, records projection images produced by differences in X-ray attenuation, and computationally reconstructs these data into a volume composed of small voxels. In bioengineering, micro-CT analysis quantifies features such as bone porosity, trabecular architecture, scaffold structure, and implant integration without sectioning the sample. These measurements support the evaluation of tissue-engineered constructs, biomaterial performance, and structural changes associated with disease, healing, or mechanical loading.

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut It's a little-known fact that the discovery and (inadvertent) use of X-rays garnered the first ever Nobel Prize in Physics. The famous X-ray image of Dr. Röntgen's wife's hand from 1895 that sent shock waves through the scientific community looks like most modern day 2D medical X-ray images. Though it is not the newest technology, X-ray absorption...

A method of functional imaging of mouse brown adipose tissue (BAT) is described in which cold-stimulated uptake of 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in BAT is non-invasively assessed with a standardized micro-PET/CT protocol. This method is robust and sensitive to detect differences in BAT activities in mouse models.

Micro-CT Imaging and Morphometric Analysis of Mouse Neonatal Brains

2023

This study describes the steps for obtaining high-resolution images of neonatal mouse brains by combining micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and a contrast agent in ex vivo samples. We describe basic morphometric analyses to quantify brain size and shape in these images.
