Postoperative Nursing

Postoperative nursing is the specialized care provided to patients during recovery after surgery, supporting physiologic stability, healing, and safe transition from the operating room to home or continued care. It works through systematic assessment and monitoring of airway and breathing, circulation, consciousness, pain, wound status, fluid balance, and mobility, with timely interventions such as oxygen support, analgesia, infection prevention, and patient education when indicated. In clinical practice, postoperative nursing helps identify complications early, coordinate multidisciplinary care, promote functional recovery, and prepare patients to manage medications, incisions, activity, and warning signs after discharge.
