Cysteine-stabilized Alpha-beta Superfamily

The cysteine-stabilized alpha-beta superfamily comprises compact, disulfide-rich proteins and peptides that share an alpha-helix and beta-sheet framework, making them important models for understanding molecular structure and biological function. Conserved cysteine residues form disulfide bonds that constrain the peptide backbone and stabilize exposed loops, which can interact selectively with ion channels, receptors, or enzymes. In behavior research, members such as venom-derived neuroactive peptides can alter neuronal signaling and influence locomotion, feeding, defense, or social responses. Comparing these structures helps link sequence variation to target specificity, physiological effects, and the evolution of behavior-modifying molecules.

This video demonstrates an in vitro assay utilizing β-glucans to activate microglial cells for the production of superoxide radicals, a reactive oxygen species. In brain cancer cells, the generated reactive oxidants actively suppress tumor cell proliferation and induce cell death.

Creating and Applying a Reference to Facilitate the Discussion and Classification of Proteins in a Diverse Group

Source: Sina Shahbazmohamadi and Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti-Roodposhti, School of Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT Directional solidification zone melting is a metallurgical process in which a narrow region of a crystal (usually in the form of bar) is melted. The furnace moves along the rod shape sample, meaning that the molten zone is moved along the crystal and the molten zone is moved from one end of the bar to the other. This mechanism is widely used in alloys, however...
