Cell Isolation

Cell isolation is the process of separating specific cells from a tissue, fluid, or mixed cell population for study or use in biological research. It typically combines mechanical or enzymatic dissociation to release cells with separation methods such as centrifugation, density gradients, antibody-based selection, or flow sorting, depending on cell properties and experimental goals. Isolated cells can be cultured, characterized, genetically analyzed, or used to investigate cell function, disease mechanisms, and responses to treatments. Careful control of tissue handling, sterility, viability, and cell composition is essential for producing reliable results and enabling applications in developmental biology, immunology, cancer research, and regenerative medicine.

This method for isolating functional immune cells from the heart provides an alternative to the conventional methods of collagenase digestion, which causes unwanted immune cell activation, resulting in a decreased responsiveness of these cells. Our method of isolation yields functional cardiac immune cells by avoiding problems associated with enzymatic digestion.
