Hepatic Circulation

Hepatic circulation is the specialized blood-flow system that delivers oxygen, nutrients, and absorbed substances to the liver for processing, making it essential to metabolism and homeostasis. Blood reaches the liver through two vessels: the hepatic artery supplies oxygen-rich blood, while the hepatic portal vein carries nutrient-rich blood from the digestive organs; these streams mix in hepatic sinusoids, where hepatocytes modify, store, or detoxify substances before blood drains into central veins and the hepatic veins. This arrangement supports glucose regulation, plasma protein production, bile formation, and the clearance of drugs and metabolic wastes, while also linking digestive function with whole-body physiology.

An optical system was developed to visualize hepatic microcirculation with FITC-labeled erythrocytes and to measure the partial pressure of oxygen in the microvessels with laser-assisted phosphorimetry. This method can be used to investigate physiological and pathological mechanisms by analyzing microvascular structure, diameter, blood flow velocity, and oxygen tension.

Selective Harvesting of Marginating-hepatic Leukocytes

Marginating-hepatic leukocytes exhibit unique characteristics and distinct immunological functions compared to other leukocyte populations. Here we describe a method for selective harvesting of this specific hepatic cell population, through forced perfusion of the liver of rats or mice. Marginating-hepatic leukocytes seem critical in determining susceptibility to hepatic-related diseases and metastases.

Development of a Hepatitis B Virus Reporter System to Monitor the Early Stages of the Replication Cycle

Here we describe a newly developed hepatitis B virus (HBV) reporter system to monitor the early stages of the HBV life cycle. This simplified in vitro system will aid in the screening of anti-HBV agents using a high-throughput strategy.

In this manuscript, we describe percutaneous isolated hepatic perfusion with simultaneous chemofiltration as treatment for unresectable liver metastases. This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia in the angiosuite by an experienced team, consisting of an interventional radiologist, a clinical perfusionist and anaesthesiologist.
