Rod Cells

Rod cells are specialized photoreceptor neurons in the retina that enable vision in dim light and support peripheral and night vision. When photons enter a rod cell, they activate rhodopsin, a light-sensitive pigment that triggers a biochemical cascade, lowers cyclic GMP levels, closes sodium channels, and changes the cell’s membrane potential. Signals then pass through retinal neurons to the brain, where visual information is processed. Rod cells provide high sensitivity but limited color and spatial resolution, making them important for studying phototransduction, retinal circuitry, and disorders such as night blindness and retinitis pigmentosa.

Here we present a community accepted protocol in multimedia format for subretinally injecting a bolus of RPE cells in rats and mice. This approach can be used for determining rescue potentials, safety profiles, and survival capacities of grafted RPE cells upon implantation in animal models of retinal degeneration.

We describe here a method for biopsying olfactory mucosa from rat and human nasal cavities. These biopsies can be used for either identifying molecular anomalies in brain diseases or isolating multipotent adult stem cells that can be utilized for cell transplantation in animal models of brain trauma/disease.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Animal records must be accurately maintained to ensure that data collection is correct. Records range from maintaining information on cage cards to having a detailed database with all of the relevant information on each animal. The primary component of recordkeeping is the individual identification of research animals. There are a variety of methods suitable for identifying mice and rats. This...

Environmental Enrichment for Rodents

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Environmental enrichment involves objects and practices that encourage natural behaviors, improve psychological well-being, and promote better welfare in laboratory rodents. Environmental enrichment should be tailored to the...
