Acute Ethanol Treatment

Acute ethanol treatment is a controlled, short-term exposure of cells, embryos, or model organisms to ethanol, used to examine how alcohol perturbs development and cellular function. Because ethanol readily diffuses across biological membranes, it can alter membrane properties, gene regulation, intracellular signaling, and tissue interactions during sensitive developmental windows. Researchers apply defined doses for specified periods and then assess outcomes such as growth, morphogenesis, cell survival, or differentiation. This approach helps link ethanol exposure to developmental abnormalities, clarify mechanisms underlying fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, and identify developmental stages or pathways that are especially vulnerable.

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

Biofuels: Producing Ethanol from Cellulosic Material

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, cellulosic material (such as corn stalks, leaves, grasses, etc.) will be used as a feedstock for the production of ethanol. The cellulosic material is first pretreated (ground and heated), digested with enzymes, and then fermented with yeast. Ethanol production is monitored using an ethanol probe. The experiment can be extended to optimize ethanol production by varying the feedstock used,...

Endovascular Treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke Using the Stent Retriever-Assisted Vacuum-Locked Extraction Technique

2025

Source: Schregel, K., et al. Optimized Management of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke using the stent retriever-assisted vacuum-locked extraction technique. A guiding sheath is introduced through the femoral artery to reach the clot. A catheter with a stent retriever secures and extracts the clot. Vascular imaging is done to confirm successful reperfusion.

An Acute Retinal Model for Evaluating Blood Retinal Barrier Breach and Potential Drugs for Treatment

A low-cost, easy-to-use and powerful system is established to evaluate potential treatments that could ameliorate blood retinal barrier breach induced by histamine. Blood vessel leakage, Müller cell activation and the continuity of neuronal processes are utilized to assess the damage response and its reversal with a potential drug, lipoxin A4.
