Protein Localization Retina

Protein localization in the retina is the process of determining where specific proteins are distributed within retinal cells and tissue, a key step in understanding neural structure and function. Researchers typically use methods such as immunohistochemistry, fluorescent protein tagging, and microscopy to visualize target proteins and relate their positions to cellular compartments, including photoreceptor outer segments, synapses, and neuronal membranes. Mapping these patterns reveals how proteins support phototransduction, synaptic signaling, and retinal development, while abnormal localization can indicate mechanisms of neurodegeneration or inherited retinal disease. This information also helps evaluate disease models and identify potential targets for therapeutic research.

Identification of Plasmodesmal Localization Sequences in Proteins In Planta

Plant intercellular connections, the plasmodesmata (Pd), play central roles in plant physiology and plant-virus interactions. Critical to Pd transport are sorting signals that direct proteins to Pd. However, our knowledge about these sequences is still in its infancy. We describe a strategy to identify Pd localization signals in Pd-targeted proteins.

We describe a method to localize fluorescently tagged proteins in electron micrographs. Fluorescence is first localized using photo-activated localization microscopy on ultrathin sections. These images are then aligned to electron micrographs of the same section.
