Murphree efficiency describes the actual change in liquid composition across a tray compared to the change if the exiting liquid were in equilibrium with the exiting vapor. Low efficiencies indicate problems like low interfacial area or low superficial velocities, enabling engineers to identify design issues and optimize column performance for better separation outcomes.

The boil-up ratio (VB) is the ratio of liquid recycled into the column to the amount of liquid leaving as bottoms. It determines the slope of the operating line from the bottoms composition in McCabe-Thiele analysis. Adjusting the boil-up ratio affects the amount of vaporization in the reboiler and influences the overall separation efficiency and product composition.

Sieve trays are support plates containing holes that allow vapor to bubble through liquid on the tray. They provide maximum interfacial area between liquid and vapor phases, promoting efficient mass transfer and separation. The increased contact area enables better component separation based on volatility differences in the mixture.

Lower reflux rates reduce the purity of distillate products because less liquid is recycled to enhance separation. Higher reflux rates improve distillate purity by providing more contact stages for volatile components to separate from heavier components. However, engineers must balance purity requirements against increased energy costs associated with higher reflux operation.
