Insectary Rearing

Insectary rearing is the controlled maintenance and propagation of insects under laboratory conditions, enabling researchers to obtain reliable organisms for biological studies. The process regulates environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, light, diet, population density, and developmental timing to support healthy growth, reproduction, and consistent life-stage production. In biology, insectary-reared colonies provide standardized material for research on development, behavior, genetics, ecology, host–insect interactions, and disease transmission. Careful colony management also helps reduce experimental variability, preserve useful traits, and supply insects for applications including biological control, toxicology, and studies of vector competence.

This video illustrates the general techniques used to rear Anopheles gambiae in the laboratory. The methods for caring for laboratory mosquitoes are demonstrated through all stages of the organism's life cycle from larvae to pupae to blood-feeding adults.

Rearing the Fruit Fly Drosophila melanogaster Under Axenic and Gnotobiotic Conditions

A method for rearing Drosophila melanogaster under axenic and gnotobiotic conditions is presented. Fly embryos are dechorionated in sodium hypochlorite, transferred aseptically to sterile diet, and reared in closed containers. Inoculating diet and embryos with bacteria leads to gnotobiotic associations, and bacterial presence is confirmed by plating whole-body Drosophila homogenates.

2011

Fopius arisanus is an egg-larval parasitoid of Tephritid fruit flies that is successfully used in biological control of these important tropical pests. We describe here an optimized protocol for rearing F. arisanus on a small scale using readily available materials.

The Complete and Updated "Rotifer Polyculture Method" for Rearing First Feeding Zebrafish

Larval zebrafish are adapted to feed on zooplankton. It is possible to capitalize on this natural feature in the laboratory by growing first feeding fish together in the same system with live saltwater rotifers. This "polyculture" strategy promotes high growth and survival with minimal labor and disturbance to the larvae.

Hand-Rearing Method for Infant Marmosets

Here, we describe a hand-rearing method for raising infant marmosets in an animal incubator. This method greatly increases the survival rate of marmoset infants, which provides the opportunity to study the development of marmoset infants with similar genetic backgrounds raised in different postnatal environments.
