Bfgf Supplementation

bFGF supplementation is the controlled addition of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF, or FGF2) to cell culture media or biological systems to regulate cell behavior and maintain responsive cell populations. After binding fibroblast growth factor receptors, bFGF activates receptor tyrosine kinases and downstream signaling pathways such as MAPK/ERK and PI3K/AKT, influencing proliferation, survival, and, depending on cell type and culture conditions, differentiation. In biology, researchers use supplementation to support stem and progenitor cell expansion, investigate growth-factor signaling, and develop tissue-engineering or regenerative models. Careful control of concentration, timing, and culture context is essential because cellular responses are highly context dependent.

Current treatments of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) aim at alleviating disease symptoms but may cause severe side effects. Thus, alternative strategies are being investigated in animal colitis models. Here, we explain how the beneficial effects of diet supplements on clinical IBD signs are analyzed in such a colitis model.
