Lens Pigment

Lens pigment refers to the light-absorbing molecules that give the vertebrate eye lens its characteristic coloration and influence how light reaches the retina. These pigments, including age-associated products of tryptophan metabolism and modified lens proteins, absorb ultraviolet and short-wavelength visible light; their concentration and distribution can change as the lens ages. Lens pigment therefore contributes to retinal photoprotection and the lens’s optical filtering properties, while excessive accumulation or associated protein changes can reduce transparency. Studying lens pigment helps biologists investigate vision, lens development, aging, and cataract formation, and supports research into ocular health and light-induced damage.

In newt, the lens regenerates always from the dorsal iris by transdifferentiation of the iris pigmented epithelial cells (IPEs). Here we describe a procedure to culture dorsal and ventral newt IPE cells and their implantation to the newt eye. The implanted cells are then studied by tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry.
