Postoperative Collections

Postoperative collections are localized accumulations of fluid, blood, lymph, or infected material that develop in or near a surgical site, and recognizing them is essential for safe recovery. They arise when surgery disrupts tissues and vessels, allowing serous fluid or blood to collect, lymphatic drainage to leak, or microorganisms to establish an abscess; imaging findings, timing, symptoms, and laboratory data help distinguish these processes. In medicine, evaluating a collection guides observation, antibiotics, image-guided aspiration or drainage, and occasionally repeat surgery, while reducing risks such as wound breakdown, sepsis, organ compression, and delayed healing. Understanding their causes also supports prevention and postoperative monitoring.
