Mouse Carotid Artery

The mouse carotid artery is a major blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood from the aorta toward the brain and head, making it an important structure in cardiovascular and neurological research. Its branches, including the internal and external carotid arteries, distribute blood through the neck and regulate cerebral perfusion in response to changing vascular resistance. Researchers study the mouse carotid artery to investigate atherosclerosis, hypertension, thrombosis, stroke, and vascular injury. Experimental procedures such as carotid ligation, stenosis, and blood-flow measurement help model disease mechanisms, evaluate vascular interventions, and assess how altered circulation affects brain function and tissue health.

Mechanical Testing of Mouse Carotid Arteries: from Newborn to Adult

Cited by 31 •

2012

Passive mechanical testing of mouse carotid arteries is described, with special consideration for adapting to different specimen ages. The procedures include determining the in vivo length of the artery, mounting it in a pressure myograph, recording data, measuring the unloaded dimensions and analyzing the resulting data.

Source: Leda, A. R., et al. Mouse Microsurgery Infusion Technique for Targeted Substance Delivery into the CNS via the Internal Carotid Artery. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates a microsurgical procedure designed to facilitate the targeted infusion of a test substance into the brain via the internal carotid artery (ICA). The procedure involves precise suturing and vascular manipulation to temporarily restrict blood flow, ensuring controlled delivery. A capillary tube is inserted into...

A Model of Disturbed Flow-Induced Atherosclerosis in Mouse Carotid Artery by Partial Ligation and a Simple Method of RNA Isolation from Carotid Endothelium

This describes a partial carotid ligation surgery, which causes disturbed flow conditions and subsequent atherosclerosis development (in two weeks) with intraplaque neo-vascularization (in four weeks) in the mouse common carotid artery. We also describe a novel method of RNA isolation from the carotid intima, providing high purity endothelial RNA.
