Pulsbølgehastigheden (PWV) måling vurderer arteriel stivhed ved en tonometri-baseret system, som måler den hastighed, hvormed arterietrykket bølge bevæger sig langs arteriel træet, typisk tilnærme den tid, det tager denne bølge til at rejse fra den faldende aorta (ved hjælp af carotis arterie som et surrogat) til den femorale arterie. Carotis-femoral PWV stiger to-eller tredoblet på tværs af voksne levetid.
