Common Peroneal Nerve Isolation

Common peroneal nerve isolation is a surgical and experimental technique that separates this peripheral nerve from surrounding tissues while preserving its anatomical continuity, enabling controlled study or manipulation. The procedure typically uses anatomical landmarks near the fibular head, followed by careful blunt or sharp dissection to expose the nerve and protect its fascicles, blood supply, and adjacent structures. In bioengineering, isolated nerves provide access for electrode placement, neural recording, stimulation, and evaluation of nerve injury or regeneration. This preparation supports the development of peripheral nerve interfaces, prosthetic control systems, and engineered therapies for restoring sensory or motor function.

Construction of a Composite Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface in a Rat Model of Nerve Injury

Source: Svientek, S. R., et al. Fabrication of the Composite Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (C-RPNI) in the Adult Rat. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the surgical construction of a composite regenerative peripheral nerve interface (C-RPNI) in a rat model of peripheral nerve injury. The procedure involves attaching a transected peroneal nerve to a muscle graft and overlaying it with a dermal skin graft to promote nerve regeneration. Over time, motor and sensory neurons...

We demonstrate a protocol for axoplasm isolation from adult rat sciatic nerve based on dissection of nerve fascicles and incubation in hypotonic medium to release myelin and lyse non-axonal structures, followed by extraction of the remaining axon-enriched material.

The tibial nerve transection model is a well-tolerated, validated, and reproducible model of skeletal muscle atrophy. The model surgical protocol is described and demonstrated in C57Black6 mice.

An Anatomical Study of Nerves at Risk During Minimally Invasive Hallux Valgus Surgery

Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedures rely on anatomical references to localize structures not directly visible to the surgeon. This manuscript describes a combined method of plane-by-plane dissection and sectional anatomy of fresh-frozen specimens to locate the structures at risk during MIS procedures.

Common Ion Effect

2020

Compared with pure water, the solubility of an ionic compound is less in aqueous solutions containing a common ion (one also produced by dissolution of the ionic compound). This is an example of a phenomenon known as the common ion effect, which is a consequence of the law of mass action that may be explained using Le Châtelier’s principle. Consider the dissolution of silver iodide: This solubility equilibrium may be shifted left by the addition of either silver(I) or iodide ions, resulting in...
