Model Robustness

Model robustness is the ability of an engineering model to produce reliable predictions or decisions when inputs, operating conditions, or assumptions vary from those used during development. Engineers assess robustness by applying perturbations, uncertainty analysis, sensitivity analysis, and validation under altered or extreme conditions to identify how errors propagate through the model. Robust models maintain acceptable performance despite noise, incomplete data, parameter changes, or environmental disturbances, supporting safer and more dependable system design. This evaluation informs model selection, calibration, monitoring, and risk management in applications such as structural analysis, control systems, manufacturing, and engineering simulations.

This article presents a protocol for establishing a ligature-induced model of murine periodontitis involving multiple maxillary molars, resulting in larger areas of the involved gingival tissue and bone for subsequent analysis as well as reduced animal usage. A technique to assess oral neutrophils in a manner analogous to human subjects is also described.

Intradermal Tumor Implantation as a Robust Model for Murine Cancer Intratumoral Immunotherapy Studies

2026

With increasing interest in intratumoral immunotherapy, selecting tumor models that are accessible and practical is essential. Subcutaneous tumors are easy to establish but difficult to visualize and manipulate. In this protocol, we describe methods for generating intradermal tumors that provide improved visibility and accessibility.
