Spiral Curves

Spiral curves are plane curves whose radius changes continuously along their length, linking geometric shapes with different curvature in engineering design. Unlike a circular arc, which maintains constant curvature, a spiral typically varies curvature gradually with distance, often following a clothoid relationship in which curvature increases linearly with arc length. This change reduces abrupt shifts in lateral acceleration and steering demand. Engineers use spiral curves in highway and railway alignments, interchange geometry, robotic motion paths, and other systems requiring smooth trajectories, improving safety, comfort, constructability, and dynamic performance while supporting accurate design and analysis.

Label-Free Neutrophil Separation from Tracheal Secretion Using Spiral Microfluidics Channel

2025

This video demonstrates separating neutrophils from tracheal secretions using a microfluidic device with spiral channels. The device achieves efficient separation based on cell size by utilizing varying thicknesses and trapezoidal-shaped channels. The interplay between forces results in large neutrophils accumulating near the inner wall while erythrocytes and mucin aggregates remain near the outer wall, ensuring effective neutrophil separation.

Culturing Murine Spiral Ganglion Neuron Explants on Multielectrode Arrays

2025

This video demonstrates the process for isolating spiral ganglion explants from the inner ear and co-culturing them with the organ of Corti on a multielectrode array. Spiral ganglia are carefully extracted and sectioned into smaller tissue sections or explants. These explants are cultured on the multielectrode array's active area to promote neuronal process outgrowth.

We present a protocol to culture primary murine spiral ganglion neuron explants on multi electrode arrays to study neuronal response profiles and optimize stimulation parameters. Such studies aim to improve the neuron-electrode interface of cochlear implants to benefit hearing in patients as well as the energy consumption of the device.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Calibration curves are used to understand the instrumental response to an analyte and predict the concentration in an unknown sample. Generally, a set of standard samples are made at various concentrations with a range than includes the unknown of interest and the instrumental response at each concentration is recorded. For more accuracy and to understand the error, the response at each concentration can be repeated so an error...

Analyzing Neural Activity in Primary Murine Spiral Ganglion Neurons Using Multielectrode Arrays

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of spontaneous and stimulation-dependent neural activity from primary murine spiral ganglion neuron (SGN) cultures on a multielectrode array (MEA). It involves washing and preparing the MEA, recording spontaneous neural activity, and applying controlled electrical stimuli to identify stimulation-dependent neuronal activity.
