Tris(bipyridine)ruthenium

Tris(bipyridine)ruthenium, commonly written as [Ru(bpy)3]2+, is a coordination complex valued for its strong visible-light absorption and long-lived luminescence. When illuminated, it undergoes metal-to-ligand charge transfer, promoting an electron from the ruthenium center toward a bipyridine ligand and generating an excited state that can participate in electron or energy transfer. In bioengineering, these properties support photoredox reactions, optical sensing, fluorescence-based assays, and light-driven biological studies. Its tunable photochemistry also makes it useful for investigating molecular signaling, designing responsive biomaterials, and developing spatially controlled tools for biotechnology.
